According to a court order issued by the 11th turn of the Civil Court, signed by Judge Lola Gómez, the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) must pay damages to the Uruguayan indoor football industry resulting from “illegal use of the brand and acts of unfair competition.” The measure adds that the sanctioned party must also “definitively cease” the use of the Futsal brand, property of the Uruguayan Indoor Football Federation.”
The Montevideo newspaper “El País” echoes the news and highlights that in its lawsuit, the Uruguayan Indoor Football Federation accuses Conmebol of “abuse of a dominant position” and of attempting to “take advantage of the popularity that Futsal, as an evocative brand, has acquired in national and international spheres.”
It should be noted that the scope of the resolution is limited to Uruguay and that the international football organization has fifteen days to file an appeal.
